Having a knack for characters, I often neglect the importance of creating a backdrop. I feel like I really lack in the imagination of a great place to set the characters into. This description alone is quite revealing about my priorities… Anyway, in those many picture books that I borrow (for the kids of course…) from the library, I’ve seen some beautiful, clever drawings of landscapes, urban cities, interiors etc that not just complement the final composition but are an integral part of the message and the aesthetics. Still having in mind Tom Percival’s Perfectly Norman, I did another quick sketch integrating the background. Yes, I know, I’ve got a good deal to improve there. But it’s a start.
