Anna Lowe’s Damnation sure isn’t one of my favourite books, but there is one thing that just made me smile. The hero’s affinity to baked goods, in particular the heroine’s muffins. In romances, the male leads are almost tough guys and don’t show such a weakness. But I thought it endearing. The style and the motive of that illustration doesn’t fit the essence of the book, but I had Kate Hindley’s lovely hand-textured character drawings in mind and wanted to try it out. Admittedly, I didn’t get far with that exploration though… While I did the illustration full colour, I discovered a tutorial how to do those lovely duo toned images, where the highlights are not white and the depth are not full black. Turns out it is really easy to do. It’s just applying gradient maps in photoshop – duh.
